ARCHIVES CHÂTEAU DE LA BORIE

Welcome to the archive of Château de la Borie — a place where art and nature met in a continuous, inspiring dialogue. Here you’ll find images and stories capturing the projects, encounters, and joy that shaped this unique estate.

In 2016, art historian Ardi Poels, specialist in contemporary art, and Harry Struijker Boudier, emeritus professor of pharmacology, acquired the château in France’s Limousin region. The historic property — comprising the château itself and 14 hectares of French formal gardens, landscaped parkland, a lake, and forest — became a vibrant setting for international contemporary art.

Drawing on their expertise, they created a programme that welcomed artists from around the world to exhibit in and around the château. The gardens were further developed as a “Jardin en Mouvement”, in line with the ecological vision of French botanist/ landscape designer Gilles Clément, whose philosophy — “we must work with, not against, nature” — has only grown more relevant since the 1970s.

Alongside the restoration of the historic gardens, a permaculture garden was established, celebrating biodiversity and the interconnectedness of plant life. From 2016 to 2024, the grounds and exhibitions were open to the public, hosting workshops on contemporary art, permaculture, medicinal plants, and related themes.

Château de la Borie became a place of exchange, wonder, and reflection — where art and ecology existed in true symbiosis.
